BREAKING NEWS

Montclair NJ (5/18/09) - The Messiah Falcons behind the dominant pitching of Jessica Rhoads captured the 2009 NCAA Division III Softball National Championship with a 2-0 victory over Coe College at the Montclair State University Softball Stadium.

It is the third National Championship for the Falcons this year, both the Men’s and Women’s soccer teams captured national championships in the fall.

Rhoads (28-1) struck out 13 in the championship game, a day after she  struck-out 19 against the same Coe lineup.

Rhoads (28-1) came into the tournament striking out 280 batters in 140 innings and picked up steam in the tournament.  In the opening round at Ramapo College, she fanned 30 in 28 innings and in the College World series she K’d 53 in 28 innings.

Offensively, The Falcons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 4th inning when Jessica Merkel scored on Lauren Seneca’s sacrifice fly with the bases loaded

Abby Bergakkers 4th home run of the season in the 7th inning provided an insurance run for Rhoads.

The Falcons went a perfect 8-0 on route to the championship.  They were also the only unranked team in this NCAA Tournament.
