2009 Tournament

It was once again a wild day at Becton on Sunday.  In the opener Teaneck finally shook the monkey off their back making it to the Final Four, holding off last years runner-up St. Mary 52-50.

Becton High School has been a “House of Horrors” for Teaneck who saw their runs for a county title end, the last four years with the worst being last year when the game ended on what might be the most controversial play in tournament history.  Teaneck was led Jakelle King-Gilchrist who score 16 including 5 3-pointers.  Martina Ellerbe led the Gaels with 15

In game 2 it was a meeting of familiar foes with Pascack Valley and River Dell battling for a chance at the Final four.  And for the second straight year, the Ely’s had a hand in the victory, making the winning shot, not as dramatic as her sister’s but none-the-less the game winner.  It was her only field goal of the game.   Dana Amato led the Indians with 8, while Meghan Cotter led River Dell with 6

In game 3 we had our first overtime game of the tournament between Holy Angels and Old Tappan.  In their second meeting of the season Holy Angels avenged their January 7th 58-51 loss to the Golden Knights, but it took an extra frame to do it.   Old Tappan took a 4-point lead at the half but Holy Angels returned the favor taking a 4-point lead into the 4th.

Leading 72-68 in overtime, Freshman Melanie Lockett scored five of her 10 points including a free throw with 21 second left in the extra session to seal the win.   Old Tappan was led by Alex Redetzky (26 point, 11 rebounds) and Karli McMenamin (24 points, 18 rebounds).   Holy Angels was led by Jillian Crawford (23 points) and Nicole Pepe who netted 23 points including 5 three-pointers.

The two meet again this Tuesday 2/16

The finale between Paramus Catholic and defending champion Ramapo was a rematch of their January 5 meeting where the Lady Paladins came away with a 43-38 victory.

Six weeks later the Green Raiders would return the favor 48-38 and move on to the final four at Ramapo College next week.  After being tied at 23 at the break, Ramapo came out and opened the second half with a stifling defense outscoring Paramus Catholic 10-3 to take a lead they would never relinquish.   Sara Halejian led all scorers with 30 points, including going 18 for 18 from the line.   Paramus Catholic was led by Rae Corbo and Cassidy Moore who scored  12 and 10 points respectively.

So now we move on to the Final Four at Ramapo College on Sunday.  The fun begins at 1pm.  See you all there...
